NEW Line of Hand-crafted COOL Wearables, Gear, and ARTful Originals!
New designs, new art, and a new brand just in time for adventuring! Though it has been a LOT of work, I have been feeling satisfied creatively and having a lot of fun creating new t-shirt art, new Growler and gear bag designs with Kristen (our daughter) for our new Crow Creek Coolture brand. Below is the new logo and a couple of the graphics for the weather-resistant Growler & Gather bags we are making. The water resistant vinyl bags are a perfect fit for a Growler (...from LaBodega Girdwood!) or even for berry picking this fall!

A bit of a flashback. Love this photo taken outside of my friend Tracey Broome's pottery studio in Raleigh NC where she hung a set of Raven Flags I had sent her.
They seem to be beautifully weathering into the landscape.

Creating Your Personal Mandala

| My personal Mandala created digitally was inspired by my Birth Chart Wheel. Note -I have edited the opacity intentionally for this post. |
A new year is an opportunity to learn about and renew those things that matter to each of us -and hopefully, be mindful of them throughout the year. One way is to create a personal Mandala as a visual to aid in mindfulness. A Mandala is a symmetrical design that uses shape and colors as an expression. Most Mandalas are circular and I created mine digitally in Adobe Illustrator CC, as I wanted to efficiently incorporate various imagery and graphics (both vector and rasterized) that are meaningful to me. The basis for my original inspiration and design came from a Natal Chart or Birth Chart Wheel and then sprinkling in some numerology, my Tarot Birth Card from the major arcana, which is The Empress. I've provided links in this post that may be helpful should you want to explore some of these ideas. Starting with a spiral base design, you can easily copy, cut and paste imagery, write affirmations, hopes, and dreams. There really are no rules so use these base spirals as a template to enlarge or even reduce and copy for multiple smaller spirals to form a larger Mandala! Here are a couple of Mandala base spiral graphics I put together that you can download for free to start creating your personal Mandala.

I blame my kids. Smart phones were an expensive luxury but our (adult) kids wanted to be able to text and send frequent fun pics on their travels -and so started the family of incredible handhelds. Daddy-O has even been converted and with that let's just say "pigs can fly!" We are a family of the latest iPhones and Androids with all the photo, texting, calendar, news, music and web browser apps you can tap into.
But all of this instant posting, texting, uploads, tagging and sharing has left my Blog feeling cumbersome and taking more time than using my phone for a quick update or post to the Farmers Market and to my personal Facebook accounts. Feeling overwhelmed by the social media choices available and trying to keep up I was ready to trash it all and unplug but gave myself this summer to see which social media streams will win out. So far, it appears that for ease of use it's Facebook and LinkedIn for professional work and most of my family is now also on Facebook. I don't personally Tweet though we do have my Spenard Farmers Market Facebook posts and shares being pushed out through Twitter for our Market followers. The gadget that's been left in a ziplock bag for months is my digital camera! Why lug that around when I can tap, shoot and upload with my phone that fits in my pocket?! Like the digital camera I haven't made time for my Blog like I used to and my web site has been hopelessly neglected. I don't like doing web or blog editing using my phone because the screen is too small but I opened my laptop and I did a quick review of my Facebook posts and grabbed just a few pics for my Blog that I'll share below -holy cow we have been having FUN!
Record good weather temps has let me weld up a few things for a Spenard Farmers Market garden day event I participated in. As the Community Relations and Media volunteer for the Market I'm happy to see that the Market is growing, growing and is in full swing with vendors now harvesting loads of produce bringing lots of happy market goers.
Good weather has our garden in full bloom and the new boxes Daddy-O built are producing huge, thriving greens. We held another impromptu garden party for Kristen and her friends. Kristen made a quick stop home during a layover on her way back to Boston from a research trip to the Arctic Slope. Having all my kids in one spot was a treat for Mama Llama! We found out Nigel-dog loves the hose, Black Bears love our neighborhood garbage which put us in the news... and not finding seats on Alaska Airlines Gus and I enjoyed a fun trip to Seattle on Jet Blue for the first time which is now flying seasonally to Anchorage.
At the Sequim, WA Lavender Festival Gus and I visited my parents (on the left) and toured farms, visited artists, went to street fairs and soaked up the Olympic Peninsula warm temps. Here we are at the first day of the festival -first stop was the Red Hook Beer Garden! I'm with my Grandma and Gus had to sit OUTSIDE the beer fence... hey at least I bought him a Lavender infused ice cream!
To fund more summer fun, more welding is on tap for this week as it looks like this record breaking summer of good weather is going to hold! To see what I'm up to you can find me and my latest work on Facebook if you want to be my friend!

Sorry, But This Frog Jumps!
I was in a bit of a funk this week and feeling out of sorts. Rushing to complete a HUGE list of want-to-do's as the passing of Summer Solstice signaled time starting to tick down JUST as we were getting into the swing of sun, warmth and outdoor living. My fussy, restless mood was directly linked to my overly scheduled inspired life. I have tried very hard not to be that person who rushes around, rushes her kids and bosses her husband. Let's just say Daddy-O put it perfectly.... "that's like making a FROG NOT JUMP!" What a silly thing to say to me from the man I love -and yet so true.
OK, I'll work on it... this winter!
Even though Anchorage had a record late snowfall at the end of May, the new gardens are coming around with record breaking heat and a string of blue-bird days.
We hosted a Summer Solstice "meet your neighbor" party. What fun to enjoy music, friends, food (fresh Sangria!) and beverages on our new front lawn. Many of the neighbors had not met one another -even though some have lived here for years! They were grateful Daddy-O and I suggested this party in the middle of everyone's busy, busy summer. We all appreciated the live music, festivities and conversations with an eclectic group of people, so much so, that the party continued through the night around the fire pit -which also helped to fight off these hurkin' AK-size mosquitos! Nigel was in charge of the iPod Playlist when the live music took a break.
I've been trying to get some welding in -maybe this weekend if the weather clears. It's raining right now so I'm filling Garden Flag orders and enjoying sitting at the sewing machine with a lovely view of the new gardens. Ahhhhhh....

Just Another Snowy Day In May
Hard to believe that one week ago we had to break out the winter hats and gloves again! YES, we had a late winter storm that came with snow warnings, a snowy opening day at the Spenard Farmers Market and an unusual Bike to Work Day! The crazy snowfall set several records, the worst being the 2012-13 snow season was the 232 days LONG as of Saturday, May 17 -the longest "winter" for the city of Anchorage with a high temp of only 37 degrees which set a cold record temp and if that wasn't bad enough the 0.3 inches of snowfall set a daily record! Below is a picture of my drive to my sister's house to pick her up to go to opening day of the Spenard Farmers Market!
However, in just seven days, Mother Nature transformed Anchorage to have temps in the near record 70's! What a difference the sunshine makes -I was even able to finally weld outside and finish a mountainscape wall sculpture commission that the commercial clients have patiently been waiting for. We were waiting for a break in the weather that was supposed to happen in March!

Spring Sprung (last week) With the FIRST Sunflower of the Season
Blue-bird days last week allowed me to finally weld. I'm needing to work outside until Daddy-O gets our little garage/shop rewired and ready for mama to start art making. I made a large garden sunflower to donate to the annual Passage House luncheon to benefit the Covenant House program.
No welding today, however...

Passage House, which is located in a residential neighborhood on the east side of Anchorage, is Covenant House Alaska’s (CHA) transitional living program for young women who are pregnant or parenting. Our program provides young mothers and their children with a place to live for up to 18 months, while they gain the necessary skills and resources to become productive, successful, independent adults who can care for themselves and their families. Passage House is the only program in the State of Alaska that provides shelter and services for young mothers and their babies.
The luncheon is a garden party theme this year and we are collecting donations for our silent auction. If you would like to make or donate an item, we are accepting garden items, lawn art, handmade crafts or goods. | Daddy-O surprised me with a Fire Island Bakery double-decker ginger cookie with creamy-lemon filling. Instead of continuing our walkies with cookies in hand, I decided to sit and savor the sunshine with this finger-licking delicious treat. Nigel and Olive-Dog are on crumb patrol! |
Leukemia patients from Alaska are flown to Seattle for treatment due to our limited population, limiting the number of potential matches for blood and platelets, especially when donors need to be "matched" like in my case. There isn't a day that goes by when I don't reflect on those TWO DONORS who were the ONLY ones in the entire Puget Sound area that matched my platelets when I needed life-giving transfusions from the Puget Sound Blood Center. THANK YOU. I had a condition that required me to receive only "matched" donor platelets after the monthly rounds of high-dose chemo and Leukemia killed my platelets off. During one particularly difficult round and my blood not clotting, this donor was called and drove for two hours to the Puget Sound Blood Center to donate their precious platelets that restored my levels. When the bag was rushed into my room the team and I referred to the platelets as "bags of liquid gold" not only for it's beautiful golden color but the life-giving properties it held. Due to privacy laws we don't know who these heroes were, but as a blood donor this may have been you.
When I nervously got off of the airplane on my final trip home, Gus, who was only four years old saw my baldness for the first time. Before anyone could give any explanation, without a concern Gus brightly said "don't worry Mom, you can get some new hair at Walmart they have everything!"
It's good for me to reflect on this time because as life, deadlines or my art making may start to feel overwhelming, sometimes I'm quick to take life for granted -hard to believe after my ordeal but I admit it's true. So today I'm taking pause, reflecting, feeling grateful and sharing. I wish to be a light of hope for others currently being treated for Cancer and serve as a gentle reminder that wherever you are, please GIVE BLOOD because the life you may save was mine 12 years ago.

Black Tie, the Beach and Betting
Date night! Daddy-O and I are attending the Black-tie, Sixth Annual Raven's Ball this weekend! I've donated a large, steel seal wall sculpture "Natchiq" for the live auction fundraiser that benefits the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium. Damn, Daddy-O looks good in a TUX, mmmm!
After that little bit of welding OUTSIDE in the snow, I was more than ready for some SUN.
No, global warming hasn't hit ALASKA but I was fortunate to be able to take a quick work-related trip to Las Vegas for a conference and soak up the 80 degree temps -it didn't take but a couple of hours for my winter-white skin to roast but it felt great!
And of course we didn't win one cent in Vegas but stopped by Seattle/Sequim on the way back to Anchorage to see the family and WON on my last dollar at the 7 Cedars Casino!!

a year ago I received an e-mail from a set director working on a feature film.
In the subject line was “your work in film.” The e-mail said “I'd like to feature your work in some upcoming feature
films. Please call me. Thanks.” How
could I not be intrigued (and flattered)?! The sender had seen my work at
the gallery downtown and after a brief conversation and description of the film, I was
told what the set director was looking for. I was asked to make a creative
looking desk gadget or sculpture, using things “just found lying around in my
shop” –something that a “unique” scientist would have sitting on his desk. I
wasn’t told much more until a few months after the film was shot. I had
forgotten about the project until Daddy-O had read a small press release in the
local newspaper and said “hey that movie that you made the props for is out on
“pay for view.” The movie, “Baby Geniuses and the Mystery of the Crown Jewels” was made in Alaska by John Voight
and both of my props were supposedly used. Even though IMDb only gave the film
1.9 stars, you would have thought we were watching the academy awards when we
spotted my little sculptures in the background! Throughout the movie we were
all shouting “there they are!” and “I saw them again!” Truthfully, we needed to pause, rewind, slow and rewind several times because they were appearing in a blink! Finally, I was able to
capture a quick digital picture of my cool little sculptural gadgets “Cameo”
appearances!
