Heating Up

No volcano eruption yet but things were hot in the Shop! With the radio frequency issue resolved (thank you Jay!) on my digital kiln controller, I was able to have a successful bisque firing -yeah! I unloaded some of my "Woobie Souls" that I have pictured. I'm not sure how I am going to glaze them but I did get a new set of Majolica glazes in...hmmmmm, so many artful possibilities. I'm still experimenting with various facial features and different heights of each sculpture. I enjoy making them because it's soothing creating individual face details then being able to wrap each one in it's own comforting blanket.

Your Woobie Souls are wonderful! Such bliss in the expressive faces and wrapped in what looks to me like wonderful quilts!! Will be looking forward to seeing how you glaze them.

thanks for the post Karen. I've been thinking this weekend on how to embellish/glaze their quilts...I'm leaning towards some new Majolica glazes I just got...I'm thinking of an iron oxide type of finish for the terra cotta looking one. These can be sacrificed to test some finishes. soooo many possibilities!

I find it so hard making choices on glazes too. Majolica sounds wonderful. Can't wait to see them glazed.

Well done. I would think it hard to improve on what's already there. I think if I lived in AK I too would be making sculptures of people hiding inside warmth :-) or inside Hawaiian print shirts. Looking forward to seeing how your vision is completed with these.

Hi Linda-
Thank you for the post. I can see why some clay artists/crafts people use one type of clay and and use only a small palette of glazes...I'm just starting out so I'm going to try lots of different clays and glazes -or so that's the plan for now!

Hi Tom-
Thank you for the post. How did you know I have a closet FULL of Hawaiian shirts (along with my Carhartt's, truly my clothing staple!) I was thinking that the "Woobie Souls" have a rather satisfied, warm look on their faces because they just enjoyed one of your homemade pizzas! :o))

Oh--these are wonderful--you could leave them just as they are!!
And YAY!! for having a working kiln again!!
(the kiln gods are testing our devotion, I think)

thanks for the post. yeah, I glazed them yesterday and I'm not sure that's the direction they need to go...I used some of my new Majolica glazes which was fun but changed the way I wanted them to look -we'll see, they are in (my working!) kiln cooking :o)
