Summer's Clock Has Struck

The State Fair is over. I picked up the few remaining pieces from the Bad Girls of the North booth yesterday up in Pamer. I was lucky to have great sales thanks to Vicki & Carol's hard work. It was kind of sad watching the deconstruction of the giant rides, people packing up their booths and trucks loaded with carnival remnants -though I’m sure those folks were happy to be finally packing up! The Fireweed has now gone to seed and become fluttering cotton. The mornings are darker and cooler, hard to believe just a few weeks ago we were enjoying record setting heat and midnight sun days.

Fall is my favorite time of year and not just because I have my birthday in the fall! I like the changing of the season’s, it is usually a time of renewal and heightened inspiration for me. One of our family’s favorite events is also coming up too  –the annual GCVA fundraiser. The silent art auction used to be called The GCVA Spaghetti Feed and Pie Contest. This year the popular event has a new look, new logo, and new blood. Now called the Girdwood Center for Visual Arts “Fall for Art” will be Saturday, September 19 at the Alyeska Resort Daylodge. Great new name and new look for a good cause. One of the pieces I’m donating is called “Spenard Kinetic,” a reclaimed bicycle wheel that has a dog chasing a cat, chasing a bird. It spins in the wind and the dog and cat charms on the collars jingle with the motion. I’m also donating a Halibut wall sculpture piece since there are a few commercial fishing families in Girdwood who I thought might bid for the cause.

I love the circle of animals chasing one another, the dog is so cute with his mouth open like that. At first I thought he was chasing a bone not seeing the cat, ha!

Love "Spenard Kinetic" it is just great. It would be fun to see it in motion. I think that Autumn (Fall) and Spring are my times of the year. I'm not so fond of summer usually although there are odd days of real balmy heat that are luxurious and wonderful. Funny enough, I yearn for a Northern winter! (I hear howls of laughter and shaking of heads from hardy souls in your part of the world!) It is just that the growing darkness, Christmas, later followed by the first hopeful shoots and buds breaking through snow, the chuckle of water starting to move again in ice covered streams, all that was rather hard wired into me through childhood in the UK, and, living as I do now in New Zealand with its short, muddled, back to front seasons. I do miss it. Daft aren't I!

I think the Paul Gauguin quote is insightful and very, very true!

Hi Peter- I'm with you, I love the extreme of the season's, not sure how to act without a WHITE below zero temp, Christmas!! Besides the holiday lights are so much brighter with winter's darkness reflecting off the snow :o)

Thank you Ang. The quote was e-mailed to me because I signed up a while ago at http://www.artquotes.net/ to receive "an art quote a day" -but what is a bit odd, is that most of the daily quotes do not make it through my e-mail filter (set high due to so much spam), then the quotes that do make it through are so appropriate for where I'm at that day!!

Hi Patricia- thanks for reading. I should have clarified for people outside of AK, that Spenard is a cool, renewed, older established neighborhood. When I was a kid, Spenard used to be the "red light district" and now has eclectic shops, an REI store, used book store etc. In Anchorage, we live on the fringe of Spenard and downtown. I saw this great black t-shirt with white lettering and a red illustration, the other day at the coffee shop - "I (heart) SPENARD" the (heart) was a medial illustration of an AORTA!!!! very hip shirt ;o)

you said it: fall is bittersweet and then the snow starts to fly...

Well put Gary! Now, after each rain, we look to the Chugach Mountains for "termination dust." We take bets whether kids will be trick-or-treating in the snow or not! Since this is an El Nino Year anything could happen.
