Welcome to Winter!

The Love Shack as the afternoon sun begins to set in Girdwood.

Happy Winter Solstice!

Twelve is a big number. Between today and January 1, we will gain twelve wonderful minutes of daylight -which is a very big deal considering that the sun will set today around 3:41 p.m. Surrounded by all of this snow it’s hard to believe that Winter officially only BEGINS today in the Northern Hemisphere. I’ve always happily looked at Winter Solstice as the beginning of the end. Today is one of Daddy-O’s favorite Holidays, second only to sometime in the Spring, when we spot the first Seagull returning. In Anchorage, when the Seagulls replace the Ravens it is a true sign of warmer and brighter days ahead.

12! That's it. When we used to live in Anchorage I would hear the minutes announced each morning on my drive...but lost that here in Juneau. 12!! That is the magic number.

Happy Solstice

You're right Anji, it doesn't seem like much does it?! But considering we start to gain multiple minutes EVERY day real soon adding up fast -confirming Alaska's name "Land of the Midnight Sun" where we won't even see any darkness this summer! It's all so weird!

I love cartoons about art-
12 minutes! I don't know if i would make it. Then again I might read more.
Today is our daughter's birthday and tomorrow is mine. I think the winter solstice effects us greatly.
We are winter and Mark's birthday fall on the first day of spring- somehow I like that he is spring and I am winter- suites us.
Happy Hoildays.

Beautiful cabin; brings back memories of when I lived in the mountains near Mt. Lassen. That art cartoon is great. Gary calls this time of year "in the tunnel" due to the darkness. Happy Holidays to you and your family.

How interesting to watch the seasons via your blog!... I was still in short-sleeves here on the west coast during part of my walk yesterday!
